Happy Thanksgiving Day

Happy Thanksgiving to all of us, you, me and them. What is Thanksgiving? For me, Thanks mean giving thanks to other who have done good deed for you and Giving means give something in return. It can be just the word "Thanks" or gives a gift and appreciate each other.
Let's get into the story of Thanksgiving!!!

The Pilgrims sailed the Mayflower to come this country. They had earlier fled their home in England and sailed to Holland to escape religious persecution. There, they enjoyed more religious tolerance, but they eventually became disenchanted with the Dutch way of life. Seeking a better life, the Separatists negotiated with a London stock company to finance a pilgrimage to America. Most of those making the trip aboard the Mayflower were non-Separatists, but were hired to protect the company's interests. Only about one-third of the original colonists were Separatists.

The Pilgrims set ground at Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620. Their first winter was devastating. At the beginning of the following fall, they had lost 46 of the original 102 who sailed on the Mayflower. But the harvest of 1621 was a bountiful one. And the remaining colonists decided to celebrate with a feast -- including 91 Indians who had helped the Pilgrims survive their first year. It is believed that the Pilgrims would not have made it through the year without the help of the natives. The feast was more of a traditional English harvest festival than a true "thanksgiving" observance. It lasted three days.

Governor William Bradford sent "four men fowling" after wild ducks and geese. It is not certain that wild turkey was part of their feast. However, it is certain that they had venison. The term "turkey" was used by the Pilgrims to mean any sort of wild fowl.

Another modern staple at almost every Thanksgiving table is pumpkin pie. But it is unlikely that the first feast included that treat. The supply of flour had been long diminished, so there was no bread or pastries of any kind. However, they did eat boiled pumpkin, and they produced a type of fried bread from their corn crop. There was also no milk, cider, potatoes, or butter. There was no domestic cattle for dairy products, and the newly-discovered potato was still considered by many Europeans to be poisonous. But the feast did include fish, berries, watercress, lobster, dried fruit, clams, venison, and plums.

This "thanksgiving" feast was not repeated the following year. But in 1623, during a severe drought, the pilgrims gathered in a prayer service, praying for rain. When a long, steady rain followed the very next day, Governor Bradford proclaimed another day of Thanksgiving, again inviting their Indian friends. It wasn't until June of 1676 that another Day of Thanksgiving was proclaimed.

On June 20, 1676, the governing council of Charlestown, Massachusetts, held a meeting to determine how best to express thanks for the good fortune that had seen their community securely established. By unanimous vote they instructed Edward Rawson, the clerk, to proclaim June 29 as a day of thanksgiving. It is notable that this thanksgiving celebration probably did not include the Indians, as the celebration was meant partly to be in recognition of the colonists' recent victory over the "heathen natives". October of 1777 marked the first time that all 13 colonies joined in a thanksgiving celebration. It also commemorated the patriotic victory over the British at Saratoga. But it was a one-time affair.

George Washington proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1789, although some were opposed to it. There was discord among the colonies, many feeling the hardships of a few Pilgrims did not warrant a national holiday. And later, President Thomas Jefferson scoffed at the idea of having a day of thanksgiving.

It was Sarah Josepha Hale, a magazine editor, whose efforts eventually led to what we recognize as Thanksgiving. Hale wrote many editorials championing her cause in her Boston Ladies' Magazine, and later, in Godey's Lady's Book. Finally, after a 40-year campaign of writing editorials and letters to governors and presidents, Hale's obsession became a reality when, in 1863, President Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November as a national day of Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving was proclaimed by every president after Lincoln. The date was changed a couple of times, most recently by Franklin Roosevelt, who set it up one week to the next-to-last Thursday in order to create a longer Christmas shopping season. Public uproar against this decision caused the president to move Thanksgiving back to its original date two years later. And in 1941, Thanksgiving was finally sanctioned by Congress as a legal holiday, as the fourth Thursday in November.

Brooklyn Botanical Garden

We, the whole family, started the trip to Botanical Garden through the entrance in the Empire Boulevard. The exhibit is the CHILDREN GARDEN. It has growing vegetables, flowers, and herbs and learning first head about gardening. It continued with the DISCOVERY GARDEN, where children create drawing and explore the world of plants and nature. We proceed toward the COMPOSITE FAMILY where it has colorful plants and flowers. We took lots of pictures. All beautiful flowers had bees and my younger sisters were so scared that they tried to run away. But we had lots of fun taking pictures. These beautiful flowers reminded me and my mother about our home country where we used to plants flowers. Then we walked toward the CRANFOD ROSE GARDEN. It had collections of rose plants but unfortunately it didn’t have that many roses, only the plants are there. On our way out of the rose garden, we found the NATIVE FLORA GARDEN. We entered into the world all kinds of plants including poison ivy plant. After the NATIVE FLORA GARDEN, we sat on the OSBORNE GARDEN for a while. It had a little fountain where we all dropped pennies and made wishes. Then we proceed through the HERB GARDEN into the JAPANESE HILL AND POND GARDEN. It had trees and shrubs shaped by special cloud-pruning techniques. While enjoying the view of the pond, you can come around the pond to the little house in the pond. We saw big fishes, tortoises, and ducks. My sisters fed them breads. The fragrances of the pond reminded us about the river near our home in Bangladesh. Finally we walked into the CHILDREN GARDEN because my mother wanted to see all growing plants since she used to grow them when she was in back home. She enjoyed the smell of those known plants. She was so excited that she started to tell me the names of all plants.

Finally we came out the Botanical Garden and went to Popeye’s to have lunch.
Oh what a trip it was!

Why people build up relationship which they can’t handle? Is it because people around you force you to do it or is it only you? Why is it hard to handle something that was enforcing into you? Who should we blame? YOU?????

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

Yesterday I went to Sunset Park with my family to see FIREWORK after my work. It was so beautiful and I felt good because this is the first time I actually got the time to view it in front of me. We were there until 10 pm. As usual, I was the camera girl filming the whole fire work. When we got there, first my mother sets up a little picnic spot where most of her friends also had come to experience the firework. We sat for about 2 hours, finally the firework began. My little sisters bought water ballon and some kind of bubble makers. They were playing and having while I was standing there video taping everything they were doing. All kinds of firework were there like red, white, and blue in the heart of Manhattan remembering the day of Independance. My sister and her friends were screaming and whistling for fun and enjoyment. People around us had joined her to show that how much they also loved being in the Sunset Park.

To tell you the truth, I thought that there will not be any firework yesterday since it was raining badly with thunderstorm. I was coming from work. I went to a store to buy an umbrella. When I came out of the store, it was pouring badly. The noise of the thunderstorm got me so scared that I thought I was going to die. Even though I had my umbrella, I was completely wet. Later on, I took the bus and went home to my family.

ISRAEL VS LEBANON

Lebanon attacked Lebanon on Thursday, blasting Beirut's international airport and the southern part of the country in its heaviest air campaign against neighbor in 24 years. Three dozen civilians were killed. The strikes on the airport damaged three runways, which eliminate the road to be used as supply route. The shockwaves from the fighting began to be felt a day after Hezbollah snatched two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid. Israel said it was seeking to end once and for all Hezbollah's presence on Lebanon's southern border, while the guerrillas insisted they would only release the soldiers in exchange for Israel freeing Arab prisoners. The airport, located in the Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs of Beirut, was closed after the attacks and flights were diverted to nearby Cyprus. It was the first time since Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon and occupation of Beirut that the airport was hit by Israel. Israel also fired a missile at the building housing the studios of Hezbollah's Al-Manar. One person was hurt, but the station continued to broadcast. Overnight Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon, meanwhile, killed 35 civilians and wounded dozens more, Lebanese security officials said. A family of 10 and another family of seven were killed in their homes. Later Thursday, Lebanese guerrillas fired volleys of rockets at northern Israel, killing an Israeli woman in her home. Five people were wounded. Thousands of civilians spent Wednesday night in underground shelters. Eight Israeli soldiers and three Lebanese were killed in fighting Wednesday. Senior Israeli military officials said Israel warned the Lebanese government that it plans to strike offices and homes of Hezbollah leaders in the southern suburbs of Beirut. Lebanese army forces be deployed along the border, saying Israel would not allow Hezbollah guerrillas to reoccupy its positions there. The Lebanese government said Wednesday that it had not known of the Hezbollah operation, did not condone it and bore no responsibility for it. The attack on the airport occurred shortly after 6 a.m. Thursday. Warplanes struck three runways, leaving a large crater and seven smaller holes, airport officials said. Two flights approaching the airport were diverted to Larnaca airport on Cyprus. The main terminal building of the $500-million airport, which was built in the late 1990s, remained intact. In its overnight attacks, Israeli aircraft and artillery targeted roads and bridges, as well as Hezbollah positions and houses of guerrilla members and leaders. A bridge on the main highway between Beirut and southern Lebanon was hit by big bombs that left huge craters, blocking traffic. Air strikes also hit deep inside eastern Lebanon, striking a civic center attached to a Shiite Muslim mosque near the town of Baalbek. The whole town had been shut down and residents were urged to stay in underground shelters. Patients at the town's hospital were moved to rooms on lower floors. The Israeli army said several rockets had landed more than 12 miles south of the border, showing that Hezbollah has managed to extend its missiles' range.

DISASTER IN SOMALIA

About 2.1 million people in Somalia had severe food shortages that were caused by prolonged drought, war, displacement, flooding and human rights abuses. It was stated by the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Somalia has not had an effective central government since opposition leader’s ousted longtime dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991. They then turned on each other, carving the nation into a patchwork of clan-based fiefdoms. Since then, persistent local conflicts have eroded Somali livelihoods. Infant, child and maternal mortality rates are among the highest in the world. Medicines also are needed to prevent a measles outbreak and curb the spread of polio in the region. This is a race against the clock to stem the tide of human misery. The drought has tipped the balance in the highly impoverished border areas where Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya meet. Those areas include Gedo, Middle and Lower Juba, and parts of Bay and Bakool.
The United Nations says more than 11.5 million people will require food assistance in the next six months. Somalia's Transitional Federal Government needs to do more to ensure security so aid organizations can operate effectively, Balslev-Olesen said. The United Nations also said it needed $225 million to feed 3.5 million Kenyans over the next year, but it so far has received only about $75 million. Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki said Tuesday that 5 million Kenyans are facing food shortages — well above the 3.5 million cited by the United Nations. He said the country has spent $72 million from its own treasury and from international donors to feed the starving, but another $87.1 million was needed to meet needs through June.

Now, everybody is busy with their life. Most of them are now married.
Brooklyn College has a bangali club named Shabuj Bangla Club. I used to be secretary of the club in the year of 2000.

About MySelf

I am from Bangladesh. It is located between India and Pakistan. The country was used to call East Pakistan. It became Independance in the year of 1971. I am from the city of Comilla. I was born in a village. I am the eldest of my family. My father has two brothers and two sisters. All of my aunts have boys. As a result, I was only girl from my family until my younger sister was born in the year of 1992. I was the princess of my family. Now, one of my uncle has a girl and I have three sisters. Now, my family has more girls than boys. HAHAHAHA
Can you believe that I went from princess to just eldest child of the family. I have finished my Bachelor in Science in the year of 2002. I started working when I was in college as a part time worker. But now, I work for a COOP as a system manager.

About my Family

Today I will talk about my family. Hmmm! Let's see who are the people in my family. I have a brother who is sixteen years old. He is an excellent and talented boy. He goes to Brookly Tech and he is a wonderful brother. Then the rest three are my sisters. Older one is thirteen years old. She goes to intermediate school and going to graduate very soon. I am hoping that she will follow my brother's path or at least try to be there. Next one is seven years old and she is in 2nd grade. She is a cute girl but kind to spoilt. Finally the last one is six years old. She is an excellent girl also. Yah Yah!!! I know I have a big family but the thing is that I really love them so much.

They are hearts of my Life. They love me and I love them too!!! They would listen to me. They do whatever I tell them to do. Hold up; Don't think that I tell them to do my laundry.

Eid Mubarak

Happy Eid Mubarak!! January 10th, 2006

Do you know what is Eid? Ok, let me tell you something about it. It is one of the religious holiday for all muslims. We celebrate it twice a year. One is after one months of fasting which is called Ramadan and another one is after two months and 10 day of the Ramadan.

Eid is an islamic holiday that is celebrated by all muslims. There are two kinds of Eid. Eid Ul Fitr comes after the end of Ramadan and it means to break which symbolizes the breaking of the fasting period and of all evil habits. Eid Ul Adha is celebrated exactly two months and ten days later. On the day of the celebration, a typical muslim family gets up very early and gets properly dressed up and finally attends special prayers held in big mosques, in large open areas, stadiums. After the prayers, everyone visits homes of friends and relatives. Eid is a time to come together as a community and to renew friendship and family ties. This is a time for peace for all Muslims in the world to devote to prayers and mutual well-being.

Happy Day With My Friend

Today I had a surprising visit from one of my old best friend who went to college with me. When we were in college, we used to hang around a lot. She alway had taken care of me, back me up with financial problem. I was extremely shocked and suprise to see her at my work. She is like my sister (older sister). I almost had lost contact with her for a long time. I was working and suddenly I heard my name on the microphone. The messenger mentioned that someone came to see me. I went to the main entrance, there was her waiting for me. As soon as I saw her, I took my lunch break just to be with her for an hour. We went to Dunkin Donuts and ordered two cups of coffee and we discussed about our lifestyle. I was very happy to see her, Really Happy.
